Remove Standing Water

There may be no tip for mosquito prevention that’s more important than removing standing water.

Why?

Because still water is where mosquitoes breed. An adult female will lay 1,000-3,000 eggs in stagnant or slow-moving water over her lifetime.

According to the CDC, you should walk your property once a week to check for standing water in planters, pools, birdbaths, flowerpot saucers, children’s toys, or anywhere it may have gathered during rain or normal activities where water is used.

We have found that debris-filled rain gutters and obstructed downspouts are the most overlooked breeding sites for mosquitoes around homes. It’s critical to mosquito prevention to identify and remove any water pooling in gutters and downspouts, on flat roofs, or around structures.

It is also recommended that you:

  • make sure water storage containers like cisterns and rain barrels remain tightly covered
  • fill tree holes to prevent them from filling with water
  • repair cracks or gaps in septic tanks and cover vents with fine wire mesh

Before you seek pest control, make sure you remove all standing water from your property. Or, hire your trusted pest control service to do an initial cleanup to lay a foundation for effective, integrative pest management.

Clear debris

Mosquitoes rest in dark, humid areas. They like leaf litter and wood piles in addition to the shade under patio furniture or under the carport or garage.

That’s why clearing debris is key to mosquito prevention and an important part of an integrated approach to pest management.

And you don’t have to do it yourself. We know summer is a busy season like no other.

That’s why Kinder Spray offers initial cleanup packages to ensure your yard is a clean slate before we apply our natural mosquito spray.
