Tick control fights your chances of tick-borne disease
Why is tick control so important for your health and safety?
In the summer months, as temperatures rise and we spend more time outside, it’s essential to be wary of tick-borne diseases. Especially when you realize that you don’t need to be hiking in the woods to contract serious illness from a tick bite. Close to 75 percent of Lyme-disease cases have been reported from bites that occur in people’s own backyards.
As nymphs (young ticks) they can be very hard to spot, being only about the size of a poppy seed. Most cases of disease come from these immature ticks, simply because they are not spotted and removed in time.
That’s why tick control is so important. Prevention of a tick bite is the best defense.
Identifying ticks
Ticks are not actually insects – they’re arachnids, in the same family as spiders. There are many different kinds of ticks in the US, and they can carry an array of illnesses and diseases. Different species of ticks can be a range of natural colors to blend in with grasses, leaf litter and tree barks. You can identify adults by their flat, oval, wingless bodies and eight legs.
If you find a tick crawling on you, remove it before it can bite.
When they latch onto a host, they feed and their bodies swell. A full tick may resemble a kernel of corn.
If you find an embedded tick on you or your pets, remove it safely and promptly.
How can I keep them out of my yard?
Ticks love moist, shaded areas. Whether they crawl into your yard from wooded surroundings or, more likely, are carried in by animal visitors, it’s important that they don’t find ideal conditions to settle in.
The first part of tick control is removing the conditions that make ideal habitats. It’s important to take preventative action to keep ticks out of your yard. Getting rid of yard debris like leaf piles and keeping wood stacks far from the house can make a big difference. Likewise, regular mowing so there’s no tall grass to hide in is part of preventative tick control.
You can also landscape with repellant plants and keep a 3-foot barrier of gravel or wood chips between wooded areas and lawns to keep ticks away.
If your yard gets visits from deer, mice, raccoons, or other possible tick hosts, address the issue. They are likely carrying ticks in.
In addition to these preventative actions, seek professional tick control.
