When to call an exterminator for fleas before they become a real problem!

Fleas suck. And a flea infestation can be really draining. Fleas can carry a wide variety of issues for pets, and while they don’t necessarily seek out humans, they do carry significant health risks, nonetheless. And while there are steps you can take to mitigate a flea infestation, the best time to call an exterminator for fleas is at the first sign of an itchy pet.

What does a flea infestation look like?

Most pet owners probably accept the threat of fleas as a part of life. A major portion of the pet care industry is devoted to the prevention and treatment of fleas. They’re virulent little leapers. However, as common as fleas are, you may not be familiar with the signs of a flea infestation. Not to worry though; you can spot a mild flea infestation pretty simply.

First, keep an eye on your pets, especially if you notice them scratching more than usual. Fleas love hanging out on pets’ fur and then they can easily migrate to other spots in the house: cracks in the wall, carpets, furniture, bedding. Any warm and cozy place that resembles a furry coat is an ideal home for fleas.

If you suspect you have fleas, you can assess the gravity of your flea infestation by putting a bowl of water on the floor and hanging a bright light right over it. Fleas will be attracted to the light and then fall into the water.

So you think you have fleas?

If you think you have a flea problem, there are a few measures you can take to mitigate the infestation:

  • Vacuum and deep clean all the carpets in your home.
  • If you have pets, clean them with a flea shampoo. (Yep, we said, “If you have pets.” It’s possible to get fleas without even owning a pet)
  • Wash everything. From pet beds to your bedding, towel, and pillows. Everything must be cleaned and well dried. Make sure not to leave anything damp after cleaning, as fleas thrive in moist conditions.

Ultimately, the most important thing that you can do yourself is to call in the professionals.

When is it time to call exterminator for fleas?

Honestly, getting professional help is best done at the very beginning, when you first notice the fleas in your home. The truth is, even after you’ve done all the above, most likely you won’t be flea-free.

These little things spread extremely fast (female fleas can make up to 50 eggs/day for almost 2 months), so by the time you get to them, they’re already several leaps ahead.

So, when is it time to call exterminator for fleas? At the first sign of them!
