Breeding mosquitoes are more than a nuisance
No one likes a mosquito bite – but the fact is, mosquitoes are more than a nuisance. Mosquitoes can carry serious diseases, like West Nile virus, dengue, or malaria. In recent years, serious mosquito-borne illnesses have been on the rise. It’s important to eliminate mosquitoes and mosquito habitats from your property, to help take care of your loved ones, your pets and your community.
Remove mosquito habitats
The first thing you can do is sweep your property for potential mosquito breeding grounds and eliminate them. An adult female mosquito will lay 1,000-3,000 eggs in stagnant or slow-moving water over her lifetime. It’s important to identify and remove any standing water that may be pooling in gutters and downspouts, on flat roofs, or around structures.
The EPA recommends the following actions to prevent mosquitoes from breeding on your property:
- Remove standing water in rain gutters, old tires, buckets, plastic covers, toys, or any other container where mosquitoes can breed.
- Regularly empty and change the water in birdbaths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels, and potted plant trays to destroy potential mosquito habitats.
- Get rid of temporary pools of water by draining them or filling them in with dirt.
- Keep your swimming pool water treated and appropriately circulating.
