Live in New England? Don’t Overlook the Danger of Ticks in the Fall!
With summer winding down, we are starting to look forward to the best parts of fall in New England. We’ll feast our eyes on the vibrant hues of autumn leaves, we’ll snuggle up in cozy sweaters, we’ll enjoy warming teas and sumptuous foods, maybe take part in apple picking or a hay ride… But as you’re gearing up to enjoy fall to the fullest – especially all the outdoor activities on offer – don’t overlook the danger of ticks in the fall. Although temperatures are cooling, the most dangerous ticks don’t necessarily die off – quite the opposite, in fact. But don’t worry; here at Kinder Spray, we specialize in protecting you and your property from disease-carrying ticks and other pests, all season long.
Ticks in the Fall: What’s the Risk?
You might associate ticks with the spring and summer. It’s true that these seasons are a risky time for nature lovers, as this is when blacklegged ticks in the nymphal stage are active. (Blacklegged ticks, also known as deer ticks, are the kind that carry Lyme disease). Ticks in the nymphal stage are tiny – they can be as small as a poppy seed! This makes them difficult to detect when they’re on your clothes or skin, increasing the risk of a bite and thus infection with Lyme disease.
But what about ticks in the fall? While it’s true that certain species of ticks – specifically, the American dog tick and the Lone Star tick – are not active in fall and winter months, the blacklegged tick remains abundant and active in the fall. And unfortunately for us in New England, this is the species of tick that carries Lyme. According to the University of Rhode Island Tick Encounter Resource Center, “these adult stage ticks start to become abundant early in October, and they will remain active through the winter as long as the temperatures are above freezing and the ground is not frozen or covered by snow.”
